湯德章1907年出生於台南，玉井國小六年級老師回憶湯德章的為人『有抑強扶弱之氣概』。◆ 湯德章雖考進台南師範，卻因父親離世，家境貧寒，輟學返家務農。◆ 湯德章後來考入警察練習所，畢業後曾任警官，後再前往日本深造，通過日本高等文官司法人員考試，回台後執業律師。◆ 終戰後，陳儀治台期間，湯德章誓言絕對不擔任中國官吏。他說：「當中國官在心理上要做貪污的準備，我不願埋沒自己的良心」。◆ 1947年二二八事件發生，3月6日「二二八事件處理委員會台南市分會」成立，湯德章被推爲治安組長。 3月13日湯德章以叛亂罪名被捕。◆ 憲、警、特務闖進湯德章的住所，湯德章力抗拒捕，爭取時間將有關名單資料燒毀，使許多台南菁英及成大學生倖免於難。◆ 湯德章受刑時，士兵吆喝『跪下！』「他媽的！看你們台灣，還敢不敢造反？」湯德章猶神情自若，傲骨凜然，端立不願下跪。◆ 後來雖經高等法院判決「無罪」，
